“I will never eat a burger again”,
“I know my consumer rights”,
“We tried to ask shopkeepers some questions but they were evasive”
“PVR overcharges us but there is nothing we can do about it” |

DPS student standing up and informing the audience of how he found mostshop-keepers evasivewhen he asked them about their business practices. |
These were some reactions to the ‘Consumer Rights andDuties’ talk that was held in Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj, on May 3 2005. The interaction between the ‘3Cs consumer club’ (of DPS VK) students and the Consumer VOICE team gave some interesting insights into the minds of today’s young consumers. The students (of standard VIII and above), were very vocal with their responses to a presentation that was made to them on their consumer rights. Around 100 students participated in the session. |
| The Consumer VOICE team, headed by Dr Roopa Vajpeyi (Hony. Editor, Consumer VOICE) was the main resource person for Dr Roopa Vajpeyi the ‘Guest Speaker Programme’ of DPS, Vasant Kunj, school. A PowerPoint presentation titled,‘Your consumer rights: Why you should know about them’ was made for the students. |

Mrs Madhu Suri, teacher, G G Sr Sec School – making a point during the interactive talk |
The Consumer VOICE Education Programme attempts to introduce consumer education in the non-formal stream of school education, with minimal theoretical content. The idea is to make students aware of the very dynamic consumer scene in India, and apprise them of the fact that a multi-million dollar industry of advertising, marketing and consumer research revolves around the consumption patterns of these young consumers. Mr Vinay Kumar, Principal, DPS Vasant Kunj, talked of ‘fear’ in consumer minds being one of the biggest impediments to consumer protection in this age, and it was information, and the power of knowledge which could instil confidence in consumer minds, especially young intellects. |
| The two-hour programme was attended by teachers of 18 other schools of Delhi. The Department of Consumer Affairs, Govt of India has initiated a nation-wide consumer club programme to sensitise students about consumer education. The VOICE consumer club programme is part of the same initiative. VOICE is currently initiating and running consumer clubs in 50 schools in Delhi and surrounding areas. |
