activities - Work done by VOICE in the area of Food Safety

VOICE was established in 1983 with the help of Professors and students of Delhi University. It was registered in 1986 as a voluntary non-profit, non-political action group dedicated to the task of promoting the interest of consumers.

VOICE has been involved in food safety issues since mid 80's when it was included as a consumer representative on the CCFS to represent and protect consumer interest. It has been serving on the Central Committee for Food Standards (Ministry of Health) and its sub-committees for many years.

VOICE also has current representation on BIS committees relating to food, namely:

	Tobacco and Tobacco products sectional committee FAD 4.
	Slaughter house and Meat Industry sectional committee FAC 56.
	Sugar Industry Sectional Committees FAC 2.

VOICE is also a regular member of National Codex Committee and represents the consumer view points on seven of its shadow committees namely -----

	Codex Committee on Food Labeling.
	Codex Committee on General Principles.
	Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses.
	Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants.
	Codex Committee on Food Hygiene.
	Codex Regional Coordinating Committee for Asia.
	Adhoc Inter Governmental Task Force on Food derived from Biotechnology

VOICE had recently organized:

A Codex Regional Training Workshop in Feb.2000 at Hotel Park Royal in which consumer groups from Asian Countries were invited. Area of focus in the workshop was Codex and Biotechnology.

Asia Codex Workshop Training Programme in November, 2001 at Hotel Connaught, New Delhi, on Infant Food and Safety Issues .

VOICE was also included in the National Delegation in the Codex Meetings held recently in Paris, Ottawa and Berlin. Dr. Sri Ram Khanna, Managing Trustee, represented VOICE in the Codex Committee on General Principles and codex Committee on Nutrition and Special Dietary Uses in the years 2000 and 2001. Mr. Bejon Misra, Advisor, VOICE attended the Codex Committee and Food Labeling.
