As is evident from the above image, the Indian Telecommunication network is growing at a rapid space. With a subscriber base of 621 million connections ( as on March 2010), Indian Telecommunications network is the 3rd largest in the world. The sector which is growing at a speed of 45% during the recent years is possible due to various proactive and positive decisions of the Government and contribution of both by the public and the private sectors.

However, the need of regulation grew with the entry of private sectors. This came the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was, thus, established with effect from 20th February 1997 by an Act of Parliament, called the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997, to regulate telecom services.
