India has seen a market surge in the lipstick segment with brands that cost as much as Rs 400 apiece.
Shades and gloss apart, are lipsticks safe to use? Is the colour food-grade? What about heavy metals that one ingests bit-by-bit everytime one eats?
consumer-voice.org tests of 14 brands of lipsticks show that only one brand reveals its list of ingredients on the label. Many brands do not even mention the ‘best before’ date or the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
No brand has the ISI Mark or Ecomark.
Non-food colour used in seven brands.
Manufacturers do not reveal dermatological safety information to consumer-voice.org
How the tests were conducted?
consumer-voice.org undertook testing of the 14 brands of lipsticks in an independent and NABL-accredited laboratory in Baroda. All samples were masked and coded before testing. All samples were procured from the retail market and no sample was sourced from any manufacturer.
