Manufacturers’ Comments & Consumer VOICE Response On Test Results of Polypacked Milk: Sept 2011
As a standard practice VOICE sent test results of tested brands to the manufacturers for their comments. Some of them responded, seeking clarification. Our replies in brief are given below:

General response: VOICE had taken due care for maintaining the lowest temperature of the purchased samples of each brand from retailer and preserved the samples in the ice boxes with ice packs and immediately sent them to the independent accredited laboratory for testing for key parameters particularly microbiological tests before the ‘use by date’ (expiry date).

Many milk processors (manufacturers) responded contradicting especially on Total Plate Count & Coliform Count and requested for retesting which we accepted. We conducted retest on fresh samples (on different batch) as it was not possible to test samples as reported to them particularly microbiological tests as the samples’ shelf life now already expired which is only for two days. Therefore the retests were conducted on fresh samples of different batches to address manufactures’ queries.

The testing was conducted in an independent accredited test lab as per national standard applicable to product and standard test methods i.e. Indian standard/ AOAC were used for testing. We understand that the test results conveyed to VOICE by manufacturers are of samples drawn from the plant level. However VOICE purchased the samples from retailers from where consumers buy and tested them in the accredited labs.

DMS “The test records maintained in laboratory show that milk containing 6.05% Fat and 9.1% SNF was only packed by. The huge variation in the actual analysis of full cream milk in the poly pack as reported by laboratory and the results reported by you depicts the faulty sampling & testing at your level” The retest result of Fat is lower than the min. reqd. limit but we will consider the earlier reported. For SNF we have now found is 8.51 % by mass.
About total plate count as found is on similar line as reported earlier.
VITA “Fat percentage in the milk dispatched was 6.1% as against 6.8% conveyed by you similarly, SNF percentage was 9.1% as against 7.69% got tested by you.
Total plate count is stated to be 1, 600, 00, 000 cfu/ml. which is not consistent with 3 hrs. methylene blue reduction time.”
The retest results are
Fat – 6.0
Milk solid not fat (SNF ) – 9.06
The retest results of new batch of sample are on quite lower side against earlier reported
AMUL “ our milk cell at the batch bearing code no MS/10/06/11/6A has the following test results
Fat % 6.1%
SNF % 9.14 %
Acidity 0.128% (Lactic acid)
MBRT 6.30 hr
from where you have purchased the milk to enable us to investigate”.
The retest result of fat is slightly lower than you reported (i.e. 6.1%) but we will consider sent originally.
Milk solid not fat (SNF) - 8.85
The results of microbiological parameters is on the similar line as reported earlier. Milk purchased from Jangpura & Nizamuddin markets
VERKA “It is observed that many microbiological parameters deviated from norms. These are mainly for absence of complete cold chain till pouches reach to consumers. The retest result of Total Plate Count under microbiological parameters is on the similar line as reported earlier.
RELIANCE “The chemical analysis carried by NABL Lab indicating very high fat % i.e. 7.4 and SNF is 6.61 against 6.1 and 9.1 SNF given by us. i) At what temp. The product was stored and analyzed after its purchase. ii) How the product was handled after its purchase. iii) Cold chain, sampling method and handling of product after it purchase is very important for the product. The retest results are
Fat – 5.84
Milk solid not fat (SNF ) – 9.0

The result of Total Plate Count under microbiological parameters is on the similar line as reported earlier. ii) & iii) Answer in the general details above this table.

SANCHI The test results of our lab is entirely different and does not match the with your testing I.e. Total plate count – 7000 / ml & Coliform counts - Nil The test results as mentioned in your letter are of sample drawn from plant, however we have purchased the samples from retailer.
SARAS The above mentioned Batch of milk was tested in our Lab and as per our QC reports :-
SPC count – 4000 / ml
Coliform count – Nil/ml
The retest results of new batch of sample are total plate count - 69000 cfu/ml and coliform count 100 cfu/ml.
