You will find a bottle of jam on the breakfast table of almost every urban household.
What you will not get is precise information on what the jam actually contains, and if it conforms to national standards on quality and labelling.
consumer-voice.org tests of 14 brands of jams has some interesting findings to report:
Jams that claim to have no preservatives actually contain five times in excess of the maximum permissible limit under Indian standards.
Jams are woefully under-labelled. Looking at a bottle of jam, no consumer would be able to tell what fruit the jam actually contains.
No brand has the ISI Mark.
How the tests were conducted?
consumer-voice.org undertook testing of the 14 brands of jam in an independent and NABL-accredited laboratory in Delhi. All samples were masked and coded before testing. All samples were procured from the retail market and no sample was sourced from any manufacturer.
