When contaminants are found in soft drinks, brands like Coca Cola prefer to look the other way.

Controversy and cola seem to go hand in hand. After pesticides in colas, its foreign particles! Even after ISO-certified plants and advanced equipments to monitor quality as is claimed by the companies, contaminants still continue to creep in, in the product. For every one case that comes to light, there may be several that go unreported.

For a lone consumer, it is always a hard-fought battle to seek, and get redress or compensation. To make matters worse, multi-national corporations, which have millions of rupees at their disposal and a battery of experts to fight off legal action, point out lacunae like non-disclosure of batch number in the cash memo of the soft-drinks bottle purchased, thus making things harder still for individuals who want to expose sub-standard products.

So what is it that can really be done? Contamination cases do get highlighted in the media, they manage to raise an alarm, put the manufacturers on the defensive, and get the government to constitute fact-finding committees, but does that resolve the bigger problem of faulty manufacturing processes?

The only tool that works, in such situations, rests with consumers—boycott.
Resolute consumers who will voluntarily stop buying an offending product can bring corporations to their knees. In the wake of corporate manoeuvering, concealment of facts, and products that are environmentally-unsafe, boycott becomes a singularly effective option. India has been no stranger to the concept of boycotts.
