To live in a Safe environment is a consumer Right, which is yet to: be fully explored in its entirety. The earlier right to safety has already been stretched to accommodate the fast changing and evolving contours of safety in the modern day world. Even as we grapple with a post globalisation market flooded with unsafe white products, the agriculture sector is trying to cope with the Frankenstein realities of GM foods terminator seeds.

Chemicals and persistent organic pollutants have seeped into the warp and weft the very fabric of our existence-rendering it totally unsafe. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we consume are all unsafe. As a consequence of this rising tide of insecurity in all sectors of consumer life, consumer responsibility has increased enormously: the responsibility for individual and community action and initiative to identify and reinforce sustainable life skills available, especially to developing countries like India through traditional knowledge base. This knowledge base however, is mostly undocumented and fast disappearing under pressures of-unsustainable development and galloping urbanization. It is also being grabbed and clandestinely patented by people who know the value of patents in today's market realities.

The terrorist attacks of Sept 11th in New York and Washington and the resultant events have thrown up even more complex, and as yet not fully comprehensible questions of safety. As we try to understand this 'new war', as it is being called, of the twenty first century, all set to change forever, specially the way we live and relate to the world.. Communication technologies are supposedly building bridges, above and beyond the earlier divisive structures, even as boundaries dissolve and new geographical and historical alliances merge and emerge. Civilian life is increasingly under severe pressure and battles will not be fought along the earlier time honoured strategies. Safety, security, and safe environment will all be facing new challenges in the coming decades.

We all need to take a deep breath and meditate a little before we plunge into unleashing any hasty, irretrievable new ' insecurities into our daily lives.

Here is the Shanti Mantra.......

Let there be………

Peace in the sky
Peace in the ether
Peace on the earth
Peace in waters
Peace among herbs
Peace in the plants
Peace among the gods of the world
Peace in Brahma: the universal spirit
Peace every where: Peace to every thing
Peace only Peace
Let Peace be in me!
