Mr. Bejon Misra delivered a powerful presentation on the “Effective Implementation On Tobacco Laws”. He explained the measures being adopted actively to fight this menace. He highlighted the disturbing fact that one smoker out of two dies every 10 seconds today and that this would turn into one person killed every three seconds by the year 2030. The presentation was repleted with statistical facts related to tobacco control initiatives in India. There are nearly 1.3 billion smokers in the world, 80 percent of them being in the developing countries. Cigarette smoking in less developed countries is increasing at about 3% per year, while it is decreasing in developed countries by about 1 % annually. 194 million men and 4.5 million women consume tobacco in smoked and smokeless forms in India. India reports 5 million child smokers with 55000 children starting regular tobacco use every year.

Dr. Ralte delivered a highly informative presentation on the ill effect of the tobacco and multiple facts related to tobacco control policy making procedures in the government.
She Highlighted:
Tobacco use has not been considered as a good habit by many societies, right from its introduction in 16th century. Health effects of tobacco have been proven through numerous epidemiological studies since the past 50 years. The anti-tobacco movement acquired a global nature after the publication of the official reports on the subject by the Royal College of Physicians and the US Surgeon General

At the outset Dr. N. Pallai expressed his thanks to Mr. Bejon Misra, Executive Director, VOICE for inviting him on the occasion he also extended his greetings to those present in the conference hall. He was of the view that there should be a central coordinating mechanism, which may operate the campaigns against tobacco consumption. He also commented that since tobacco has been used as a part of staple diet in most of the sections of the society, creating self –awareness would be first step in controlling the tobacco consumption.
