How easily children accept all life forms as live in companions. Tortoises, butterflies, deers share space with toy soldiers, bears, wolves and tigers, snails and snakes live in colourful harmony and peace in their Toyland.
Real life in all its ecological variety is no less colourful or enticing. What is missing is our interest in anything outside of the man made reality in urban landscapes. The speed and the challenges of surviving in consumer-land dissipates our knowledge about our natural environment and disrupts our links with nature.
Pets in the house are at least a token connection with life other than the homosapiens. They are also supposedly our best friends.
They listen to us and if they don't, it is our own fault and at least they never talk back. They are accepting and forgiving. They don't manipulate, exploit, cheat or defraud you. They are understanding and never betray you.
They love unconditionally. They always, but always are happy to see you and are glad when you come back. They never ask where you have been, or who with, or why you are late or early. They wait patiently and uncomplainingly. They eat whatever is dished out to them and if they don't, it is because you have spoilt them.
What else does one require from a live in companion?
So here's inviting to all pet lovers to come join us in our love of creatures- great and small.
