Colas and packaged drinking water have pesticidal contamination-that we know, but what about the water that we consume the most everyday in our homes through piped water supply?
Of the four metros-Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata-Chennai residents have the most to fear when it comes to water quality.
The Chennai municipal water is microbiologically unsafe, and has very high iron content. E-coli bacteria, which should be absent in water samples as per Indian standards, was found in four water samples drawn from different areas of Chennai.
Kolkata can be clubbed along with Chennai as its water is high in hardness, iron and chloride content.
How the tests were conducted?
In a joint consumer-voice.org CNN-IBN investigation, water samples were drawn from running taps of consumer homes in the four metros. The samples were taken in sterilised bottles with ice-packed containers and flown to an NABL-accredited laboratory in Delhi the same day for testing. The testing was carried out as per Indian Standard IS 10500:1991.
