As a part of Green Action Week (GAW) initiative, Consumer VOICE with active support from Consumers International and Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) organised a plantation drive in collaboration with RWA (Resident Welfare Association) members of Rajpur Khurd. The theme of this activity is sharing community with the focus on “Clean Air for All”. The green drive came under the backdrop of increased air pollution and air quality index dropping to very poor category in the national capital after the conclusion of Dussehra festivities.
The residents came together in the afternoon of 21st October, 2018 to plant trees in their locality and usher in more greenery. Women and elderly members enthusiastically came out in support for this plantation drive. About 20 saplings of various air purifying trees such as Neem, Ashok, Babool etc. were planted.
Mr. Omprakash, RWA president and Mr. Gangaram, pradhan (chieftain) took the lead in this green initiative. They sensitized the people on the importance of planting trees with respect to winter smog that engulfs the capital every year before the onset of winter season. Mr. Gangaram, who is also an agriculturist, addressed the participants by explaining the process of plantation, how trees are beneficial in many aspects and what should be the future course of action for the young generation. He also added that if the present rate of felling off trees is carried on, in future we would have to ration clean air. His opinion was seconded by the RWA president.
The event started with preparing the ground and then planting one sapling after another. Care was taken to plant and water each sapling. Some plants were also planted in the pots as well. Green eco-friendly badges were also distributed to all the participants.
Consumer VOICE members Ms. Rinki Sharma, Ms. Ekta Purohit and Mr. Amrit Sindhu fielded questions from the community members on the purpose of Green Action Week. Questions on how deforestation and cause of global warming were also answered by the CV members. In the end everyone who planted saplings took a pledge to conserve the tree which they had planted. CV team appealed the youngsters to come forward and take this plantation initiative ahead.
