Consumer VOICE organised a plantation drive with the support from Consumers International and Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) under the Green Action Week campaign in collaboration with New Delhi Nature Society on October 3, 2018 at Soami Nagar Model School, New Delhi.
The main objective was to promote sustainable consumption and sustainable environmental practices on the theme of community sharing with the focus on Clean Air for All. In Delhi-NCR, the level of pollution has soared up to towering heights, resulting in many residents developing respiratory problems. VOICE is encouraging stakeholders to come forward for tree planting activities.
Ms. Aarti Prasad, Principal, Soami Nagar Model School encouraged the students and said that school children should be inculcated the habit of loving nature from very early on so that they can become responsible citizens towards their environment when they reach adulthood.
Ms. Rinki Sharma, Head Projects,Consumer VOICE emphasized on importance of planting tress. She said that not only school students but everyone should plant a tree as oxygen is necessary for every living being. As school students are more proactive in learning new things we chose them to become part of this activity. We wanted the school children to start taking responsibility of their environment from an early age. Clean air for all can be achieved through collective efforts of all communities.
The main speaker of the event Mr. Verhaen Khanna, founder New Delhi Nature Society, interacted with the students and discussed various aspects of environment protection, tree plantation, air quality and sustainable environmental practices.
More than 60 students including teachers, staff of Soami Nagar Model School, and volunteers of New Delhi Nature society participated in the plantation drive. The students enthusiastically asked question on environmental issues and shared their experiences of planting saplings in their home as well.
Later students, teachers, school staff and other eminent persons planted the saplings at school ground premises and took pledge to monitor, conserve and protect the plants till they grow into fully developed trees.
More than 25 plants were planted including Neem, Pipal, Areca Palm, Snake plant, Spider plant, ficus panda etc.
