Are Instant Noodles Healthy?

The ever increasing consumption of instant noodles and the number of brands entering the market perhaps indicate that there is greater acceptability of this popular snack among consumers. Based on claims by brands, instant noodles are supposed to give us instant protein and calcium, among other things. The atta brands also claim to have fibre. Consumer VOICE tested 10 popular instant noodles to check if the dietary claims on their food labels

Brands Compared:

Atta Noddles: Maggi Masala, Top Ramen, Patanjali and Patanjali Veggie

Non-Atta Varieties: Maggi Masala, Top Ramen Masala, Knorr  Schezwan, Ching’s Schezwan, Wai Wai Veg Masala and Wai Wai Masala Delight. 

As consumers, do we check the veracity of brands’ claims and understand the information given on the nutritional labels packets that we pick up? Often high in sodium, saturated fat, carbohydrates and preservatives, instant noodles should be eaten sparingly and when we do that, our choice of brand should be based on a proper understanding of the information given on the packet.

Given that nutrition-related labels are not always simple enough to interpret, or standardised for enabling comparison among brands in a specific category, we have pulled out the essential details on the basis of which we as consumers can make informed choices.
