Apart from the ‘best before’ information on the food label, what do you look for in your bread? Do the details about energy, proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fibres, etc., influence your choice? Studying the labels of the many bread brands available on the retail shelves may be easier said than done, it’s true, when all one may want is the familiarity, comfort and taste of one’s daily bread. At the same time, this is also true that it is important to be aware of what one is consuming – and the place to begin is the information given out by the brands on their labels.

Since nutrition labels or food labels are not always easy or simple enough to interpret, or standardised for enabling comparison among brands in a specific category, we have in the following report culled out the essential details on the basis of which we as consumers can make informed choices. We shortlisted 13 brands of white and atta bread to study information given on their labels with regard to protein, energy and dietary fibre. Alongside, we have rated the fat, sugar and salt quantities as per Traffic Light Labeling System.
