A detergent is a surfactant or a mixture of surfactants with cleaning properties in dilute solutions. Detergent bars are commonly available as cake or concentrated solutions.
Indian standard has defined 4 grades (1, 2 3 and 4) as per specified requirements of IS:8180. Detergent Bar shall be of four grades depending on their active detergent content.
Indian standard IS: 8180 has prescribed percentage detergency as a performance test that establishes how well detergents can remove the dirt from the standard soiled fabrics.
In general detergent powder shall be free from any unpleasant odour and shall posses good lathering and cleaning properties. Detergent shall confirm to the requirements of relevant Indian IS:8180. The synthetic detergent bar shall be lowest on phosphates, filler materials and also be non injurious to skin and fabrics.
Popular brands are Surf Excel, Rin, Henko, Tide, Mr. White, Active Wheel, Fena, Ghari and Nirma etc.
Indian standard IS: 8180 is under revision where requirement of phosphate and STPP has been changed with reduced values.
Test parameters for comparative testing are adopted from relevant Indian standard IS :8180 specification for household detergent bar. Testing has been carried out in a NABL accredited laboratory.
