GATS 2 Report – An Increase in Tobacco Consumption in Some States in India

The Ministry Of Health And Family Welfare, India recently released the much awaited Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS 2). It is not new that use of tobacco is the leading single preventable cause of deaths worldwide. Each year an estimated seven million deaths are attributed to the use of tobacco. India is the third largest tobacco producing nation and second largest consumer of tobacco world-wide. Mortality due to tobacco in India is estimated at upwards of 1.3 million.Efforts are on by the Government of India to sensitise the people of India and raise awareness especially among the youth on the harmful effects of tobacco smoking.

Consumer VOICE and its partner organisations in its effort have been sensitising people on the ill effects of tobacco through several tobacco related intervention programmes. It has focused its activities primarily on 6 states. Though an overall reduction in the use of tobacco in the country has been noted there has been a rise in tobacco consumption in some of the states in India. Consumer VOICE have disseminated press releases with our partners in states and received nation wide media coverage.

Tamil Nadu: GATS 2 shows 20% percent of adults in Tamil Nadu consume tobacco in some form or the other. The state has shown a significant rise in tobacco consumption from 16.2% in the last survey held in 2009-10 to 20 % in the recent survey.

Andhra Pradesh: The survey also shows 20 % percent of adults in Andhra Pradesh consume tobacco in some form or the other.

Madhya Pradesh: GATS 2 shows 35 % percent of adults in Madhya Pradesh consume tobacco in some form or the other. The state has shown a significant reduction in tobacco consumption from 39.5% in the last survey held in 2009-10 to 34.2% in the recent survey.

Assam: In Assam 48.2% percent of adults consume tobacco in some form or the other. The state has shown a significant rise in tobacco consumption from 39.3% in the last survey held in 2009-10 to 48.2% in the recent survey.

Gujarat:  In Gujarat, 25 % percent of adults consume tobacco in some form or the other. The state has shown a significant reduction in tobacco consumption from 29.4% in the last survey held in 2009-10 to 25.4% in the recent survey.

Goa: In Goa, the survey revealsthat 9.7 % percent of adults consume tobacco in some form or the other. The state has shown a significant rise in tobacco consumption from 8.8% in the last survey held in 2009-10 to 9.7% in the recent survey.
